WHAT WE DO
TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE
We work side by side with victims to obtain acknowledgment and redress for massive human rights violations, hold those responsible to account, reform and build democratic institutions, and prevent the recurrence of violence or repression. We fight impunity by filing criminal and compensation claims against perpetrators of crimes against humanity. These complaints are brought before international bodies, national courts, and national prosecutors, thanks to the principle of Universal Jurisdiction.
ACCOUNTABILITY FOR CRIMES AND ATROCITIES COMMITTED IN UKRAINE
We help victims to get their voice heard by bringing their cases before domestic courts, as well as before regional and international human rights mechanisms. The organization provides free legal support to victims, from the preparation and submission of their case, to the proceedings and the implementation of the decisions on the ground.
STRATEGIC LITIGATIONS
We tackle breaches of fundamental European rights through litigation. Where we identify critical human rights violations or gaps in policy or law which affect individuals in Europe, we step in and pursue cases with strategic potential. We specialize in litigation before International Courts and Tribunals. We act as representatives on the record, sharing our expertise on procedural and substantive law, or we intervene as an expert third party in cases which we are not assisting in the representation.
HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENCE
We monitor the human rights situation in Ukraine and inform the public about facts of violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms. We provide legal assistance to victims of human rights violations, including supporting strategically important cases. We protect human rights and fundamental freedoms in national and international courts, the authorities and bodies.
FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION
We believe integrity and accountability are the natural enemies of corruption and nepotism and essential in upholding the rule of law and maintaining a healthy democracy. Corruption is a very big problem in many nations of the world – some would assert that it is becoming more extensive, and more areas of development activity are being affected. Corruption is also becoming, de facto, an attack on governance as more and more of the rules under which nations are governed are breached with impunity.
STRENGTHENING GLOBAL SANCTIONS REGIME
We believe that global sanctions regime allows it to target individuals, entities and bodies – including state and non-state actors – responsible for, involved in or associated with serious human rights violations and abuses worldwide, no matter where they occurred. Those responsible for serious human rights violations shall be held accountable. We are actively engaged in an international campaign and investigation which aims to make increasingly difficult for any State to maintain impunity for human rights and/or corruption offenders.
STRENGTHENING MEDIA FREEDOM
Freedom of the media is the cornerstone to a well-functioning democracy, and journalists are vital watchdogs who make sure governments answer to the citizens’ needs responsibly. Unfortunately, the media sector in Ukraine is not always able to function safely and journalists and defenders of democracy have been harassed, attacked and killed for simply doing their job. Justice for Ukraine Foundation vzw monitors attacks against media workers and funds investigations worldwide into violence and abuse against professional and citizen journalists.
