On April 11, Justice For Ukraine Foundation had the privilege of attending a pivotal seminar right here in the heart of the European Union. The event was focused on the timely topic of Temporary Protection within the EU, with a particular emphasis on those affected by the war in Ukraine.
As legal professionals, we understand the immense challenges
faced by individuals fleeing conflict zones. That’s why it was heartening to
see European lawyers gather to delve into the nuances of the Temporary
Protection Directive, aimed at providing immediate refuge and essential
services to those displaced by the war in Ukraine. The seminar was part of the
Council of Europe’s “HELP for Ukraine, including during wartime”
project, in collaboration with esteemed Bar Associations in Belgium.
During the seminar, we explored the intricacies of the Temporary
Protection Directive (TPD) 2001/55/EC, focusing on its provisions for
accommodation, employment, and access to vital social and healthcare services. It was enlightening to discuss the practical application of these measures and their impact on the lives of those affected by the war.
One highlight of the event was the introduction of a new online
course on Temporary Protection in the EU. Its development was made possible
through the Council of Europe Project “HELP for Ukraine, including during
wartime,” as well as the EU-CoE “Judicial Training on Rule of Law and
Fundamental Rights,” generously funded by the EU Justice Programme. Designed to deepen our understanding of this complex legal landscape, the course covers topics ranging from activation processes to historical contexts, providing
valuable insights for legal professionals and stakeholders alike.
